The Coupon Queen: A blog on saving money
Money Money Money! Isn't that all we ever hear about!?

Standing on line in Memorial Hall surrounded by the chaos of hungry people figuring out what the most delicious, healthy and inexpensive thing on the menu is, a sophomore girl turns to her friend and complains, "My parents can't afford to give me any more money for food for my card. Now I have to use all of my money to eat instead of buying that hot DKNY jacket on sale at MACY's!"
The smell of freshly baked muffins and warm maple syrup, the clinging of silverware, the steam of the grill as the fresh chicken meats heat…what a savory environment, completely polluted by the cost of all this wonderful food!
It is sad to say but when I am in the café or in one of the food centers on campus I seldom hear people talking about a wild weekend or what the hot spot will be for Saturday night. Instead, I hear, "This is ridiculous, $9.99 for some chicken and rice; I have no money left on my food card!"
I am outraged when I hear this.
We college students have packed schedules and empty pockets: tell me what's wrong with this picture?! If we could just save a few extra bucks on the essential things in our lives, we could use our hard-earned money for leisure. Wouldn't you rather have an extra $50 in your pocket at the end of the week?
I asked 100 students how much they spent on food per day and how often they eat at Hofstra. From this non-scientific poll, I figured out how much an average student seemed to be spending a day on food. Given the results, it is mind-boggling how we are able to find money to go out and have a good time.
Hofstra Student Food Card Calculations:
•The average student polled had $1,200 on his/her food card.
•The semester is approximately 15 weeks long.
•On average students said they ate three meals a day at an estimated cost of $7 per meal. Drinks for the day tally up to $6, and snacks will equal approximately $5. This adds up to $32 a day.
•If the student eats on campus five days a week he/she will spend about $160 per week. Over the course of a 15 week semester that is approximately $2,400.
